The Writing with Light collective turned towards the production of the WWL Magazine after a seven year collaboration between the Journal Cultural Anthropology and the Society for Visual Anthropology.
Our original fifteen photo essays are published in the Fieldsites section of Cultural Anthropology.
Before it was Writing with Light the initiative began with Michelle Stewart and Vivian Choi for the Cultural Anthropology website. It has had a number of designs and aims over the years and we are grateful to all those who have contributed, participated in peer-review, and otherwise supported the project.
Our first fifteen photo essays were created by:
- Yannis Ziindrilis and Dimitris Dalakoglou
- Amy J. Bach, Julia A. McWilliams, and Elaine Simon
- Paul V. Stock, Tim Hossler, and D. Bryon Darby
- Kyrstin Mallon Andrews
- Derek Pardue
- Amar Wahab
- Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan
- Sreedeep Bhattacharya
- Michael Vicente Pérez and Elena Boffetta
- Martha-Cecilia Dietrich
- Irina Oktyabrskaya, Valeriy Klamm, Craig Campbell, and Vasilina Orlova

Fixed Format Re-Issue
When the Society for Cultural Anthropology relaunched its website in 2019, it was no longer able to continue support for the custom viewer that hosted the Writing with Light photo essays on its previous site. At this point we learned a material lesson in the difficulty of sustaining multimedia digital publications over time.
In response to the challenge of preserving digital photo-essays we created the “Photo essays from the Archives: Fixed Format Re-issue” series to give a fixed visual layout for each of the photo essays in a more stable format (PDF).
